Surprise as stork rarely seen in Worcestershire snapped sat on telephone pole

A large bird rarely seen in Worcestershire has been pictured sat on a telephone pole in the county.

The majestic-looking stork was pictured sat on the pole in Wichenford, near Worcester on Tuesday night (April 7).

Steve Bloomfield, head of conservation at Worcestershire Wildlife Trust, said: “We are not sure where this stork has come from, through an escaped bird or one released through a project seems most likely.

“However, wild storks are capable of long distances, and with the mild southerly airstream we are having, we should not completely rule out a wild origin unless rings or other tags are visible.

“Either way, it is an impressive and exciting find in Worcester.”

White storks are found across much of Eastern and central Europe, as well as the Iberian peninsula and Sicily, but are rarely ever seen in the UK outside of Sussex, where a breeding pair were reintroduced to Britain in 2020.
