New skatepark moved after bowls club raises noise and safety concerns

A PLANNED skatepark in Malvern has been moved after a nearby bowls club feared it would cause noise problems.

Malvern Town Council has announced the skatepark, which will still be located in Victoria Park, will now be installed further away from Malvern Victoria Bowling Club than initially planned.

The club had raised concerns at a town council meeting in March after learning the new facility would be built under permitted development, rather than through planning permission.

They had feared there would be noise issues, as well raising concerns about the proximity of children on bikes and scooters to the road.

Town councillors Anne Cherry and Karen Newbigging and town clerk Linda Blake have since met with the club to inform them the skatepark will be built further away than originally planned and fencing will be installed near the road.

Cllr Cherry, chair of the Skatepark Task and Finish Group said: “As a council we have tried to fully consider the concerns raised by Malvern Victoria Bowling Club, whilst working within the constraints of the space available and providing the best possible facilities for park users.

“I am delighted that we have been able to reach an agreeable outcome with the bowling club who have been great custodians of the bowling green and clubhouse for many years.”

Don Handy, club captain said he was pleased to hear of the updated plans and that the club had never had a problem with the installation of a skatepark.

“They invited us to a meeting and decided to move it,” he said. “The club is happy because we had concerns.

“They would be coming into our field of vision when we’re trying to bowl.

“It was also about the safety of the children using it.

“The town council has kept its promises and has listened to our concerns. We have reached an agreeable situation.

“The bowls club would like to reiterate that we have absolutely to problems with a skatepark being in Victoria Park.”
