A newly appointed High Sheriff has pledged to support young people and celebrate unsung heroes during his year in office.
Maynard Burton, 69, of Stourport-on-Severn, was formally sworn in as the High Sheriff of Worcestershire during a ceremony at Worcester’s Shirehall and has taken over the role from Ian Smith.
The retired solicitor, who worked with mfg Solicitors for more than 40 years, said: “First and foremost, it’s a great honour to be appointed as High Sheriff of Worcestershire.
“The role has historic roots stretching back more than a thousand years and is a direct appointment by His Majesty the King.
“I will focus on providing support and encouragement to the offices and agencies of law and order, the emergency services, local authorities, and the voluntary sector.
“During my year in office, I also plan to shine a light on those who work with young people and celebrate the service and contribution of the extraordinary unsung heroes across the county.
“I will be doing all I can to continue the outstanding work that’s come before me.
“This is a tremendous honour for me and my family, and I plan to do Worcestershire proud.”
The declaration was presided over by The Rt Hon Mr Justice Choudhury.
Mr Burton qualified as a solicitor in 1983 and became a senior partner and board member at mfg Solicitors, serving as chairman for a record 17 years.
He retired from the firm in 2023.
In October 2022, he received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Worcestershire Law Society for his contributions to the legal sector.
Mr Burton also hopes to work closely with schools, reformed offenders, and children who were formerly in care, to provide them with greater support and opportunities.
He announced plans to develop links with St John Ambulance, where he will look to appoint two cadets as High Sheriff Cadets for the year, and will continue the successful ‘Getting Court’ scheme.
Throughout his career, Mr Burton has supported numerous charities as a trustee, including The Mackaness Trust.
He is also a former chair and president of the Stourport Tennis and Squash Club, where he has been a member for almost 60 years.
