Young dog used as ‘bait’ discovered with horrific injuries in Worcester street

AN UNCONSCIOUS dog was found in Worcester with injuries so severe that she had to be put down to end her suffering.

The young white and tan female chihuahua cross pug-type animal was discovered near a BP garage in Malvern Road.

The suspected ‘bait’ – a method used for training in illegal dog fighting – was taken to a nearby vet after being found by members of the public at around 6.30pm on April 24.

She was in such a poor condition that she had to be put to sleep to end her suffering, with the RSPCA being notified.

Meg Cross, animal rescue officer (ARO) at the charity, said: “This poor dog was alive but unconscious, and was bleeding around the neck.

“Puncture wounds were also found around her neck and legs.

“Some older wounds were also found and she was underweight.

“It is thought she may have been used as a bait dog, which are used to train dogs involved in illegal dog fighting.”

The dog had no microchip or collar.

ARO Cross said: “This must have been very distressing for the finders and for the vet practice too as this dog was in a really bad way.

“Due to the type of injuries and circumstances here we’d like to find out more information about what happened to this poor dog.

“Anyone who has any first hand information about this dog can contact us on 0300 123 8018 and can quote incident 01787219.”

The charity continues to investigate the circumstances and is appealing to the community for any information that might help explain how the dog came to be so badly injured.
