9/11 hit musical cast receive support from real-life characters

With just days to go before opening night, a cast has received heartfelt messages from across the Atlantic.

The Worcester-based company behind Come From Away has heard from the real people whose stories inspired the hit musical, as well as the original creative team and members of the community in Gander, Newfoundland.

Performances will tell the true story of how Gander welcomed thousands of stranded airline passengers in the aftermath of September 11, 2001.

The messages come as Third Wheel Productions enters its final week of rehearsals for its debut production at the Swan Theatre, running from Tuesday, May 19 to Saturday, May 23.

Writers Irene Sankoff and David Hein said: “We wish we could be there. Break a leg, have fun and welcome to the rock.”

Other well-wishers included Claude Elliott, Gander’s mayor at the time, Captain Beverley Bass, the pioneering female American Airlines captain whose real-life story features in the musical, and several other figures portrayed in the show.

Kevin T, one of the real people represented in the musical, said: “Thank you for sharing this important story of kindness and compassion.”

Bonnie Harris said: “Sending a warm welcome to the newest members of our Come From Away family.

“The show is so important to be seen and shared these days with the current division in our world. We send all our love from Gander.”

Janice Goudie said: “Congratulations to Third Wheel Productions. You are going to rock it. I appreciate you telling our story.”

Captain Bass said: “Greetings to one of the newest companies of Come From Away and one of my favourite countries, England.

“Thank you for all you are doing and I am so proud and honoured to have you continue to tell our story.”

Claude Elliott shared his support for the production while holding a piece of concrete recovered from the World Trade Center, saying: “Wishing the cast a successful run of Come From Away. I know you will enjoy telling the story and the audience will love it.”

Hayley Hayes, production manager for Third Wheel Productions, said the messages had meant a great deal to the team.

Ms Hayes said: “To receive messages like these from the writers and the people whose stories inspired Come From Away has meant so much to the entire company.”

2026 marks the 25-year anniversary of the 9/11 attacks.
