Call for railings to be fixed after being in disrepair for years

A MAN has called for broken railings in Malvern to finally be fixed, saying they have been left in disrepair for years.

Stephen Hartland, who lives in the town, said it had been around five years since the railings between Abbey Road and Priory Road were first damaged.

Photos show the railings, thought to be an historic feature, have broken away from the posts, with one having been left at an angle.

A bollard near the bottom of the wall has also not been replaced.

Mr Hartland said he had become especially concerned about the appearance of the railings following the Malvern Water and Well Dressing Festival, which is known to bring hundreds of visitors to the town.

“I pass them often and they seem to be getting worse,” he said. “What brought it home was all the people who came to look at the springs and the wells.

He said he had reported the matter but that action had been delayed by confusion over whether it was the responsibility of Malvern Hills District Council or Worcestershire County Council.

“They keep saying ‘it’s not us’,” Mr Hartland said.

“It would be nice if we could all work together. I even thought I could get someone to give them a quote.

“It’s not a massive cost.

“We pay a lot of money in council tax and we would like these things to be well-kept.

“It’s the difference between someone doing a job and someone saying they want things to look nice.”

“You go to Malvern because it’s a pretty place.”

After being contacted by the Malvern Gazette, Worcestershire County Council said the railings would be inspected.

A spokesperson for Worcestershire County Council said: “The railings will be inspected this week, following this, we will determine next steps.”
