Latest after three injured in fire engine crash outside Italian restaurant

NOBODY has been charged nearly three weeks after two people were seriously injured in a crash involving a fire engine outside an Italian restaurant.

The crash left three people injured, two seriously, outside Benedictos restaurant in Sidbury, Worcester, on April 25. 

A man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving after a fire engine collided with a car and hit a building.

Police later confirmed that the arrested man was the driver of the emergency vehicle. 

Providing an update today (May 14), a West Mercia Police spokesperson said: “There are no updates. He is still released under investigation.”

Following the crash, staff at Benedictos released a statement and said: “”All of us at Benedictos are deeply shocked and saddened by the incident that took place outside our restaurant yesterday.

“Our thoughts are with those people injured and everyone affected. We are especially thinking of them and their loved ones at this difficult time, and we wish those hurt a full and speedy recovery.”

West Mercia Police released an appeal a matter of hours after the crash. In the appeal, a spokesperson said: “Serious collision involving fire engine in Worcester city centre

“Three pedestrians were injured today (Saturday 25 April) following a two-vehicle collision in Worcester city centre.

“Officers were called to Sidbury around 6pm after a fire engine and a car collided. The fire engine then collided with a building.

“Two pedestrians suffered serious injuries as a result of the collision, and a third pedestrian suffered minor injuries.

“A man in his 30s was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by careless driving. He remains in police custody as enquiries continue.”
