Bake Off judge joins family-run opticians for 40th anniversary celebration

A high street opticians which is under new ownership has begun its 40th year celebrations with a visit from former Bake Off judge Prue Leith.

Robert Ellin Opticians, based in Droitwich Spa, recently celebrated its milestone year with a new Prue Leith eyewear collection and a new team led by husband and wife optometrists Suhail Ali and Maheen Irfan.

The couple took over the business in October 2025 and bring over 40 years of combined optical experience to the practice alongside colleague Deborah Smart, a dispensing and contact lens optician with nearly 20 years of experience in optics.

Ms Irfan worked alongside the practice’s founder, Robert Ellin, for three years prior to his retirement.

She said: “As a proudly independent business, our team are passionate about continuing to invest in Droitwich and raising awareness of accessible, high-quality eye care locally.”

The practice offers comprehensive eye care services including advanced OCT scans, emergency appointments, dry eye management and children’s eye care.

It continues to position itself as a personal, community-focused alternative to larger high street chains by prioritising longer appointment times and continuity of care.

To mark both the 40th anniversary and the arrival of the Prue Leith eyewear range, the team hosted a special event on Saturday, May 9, titled A Taste of Prue with the celebrity TV baker dropping in.

The day included tea, cakes, charity fundraising for Droitwich CVS and giveaways with many local residents attending throughout the day in support of the business and local community.

Robert Ellin Opticians continues to operate independently, with a focus on investing in the Droitwich community and promoting the importance of accessible, quality eye care on the high street.
