Chippy fined £45,000 for employing illegal workers

THE previous owners of a local fish and chip shop have been fined £45,000 for employing illegal workers.

Homptons Pizza Ltd, which ran Hampton’s Chippy on Peewit Road, Evesham, has been ordered to pay £45k after being caught employing illegal workers.

Hampton’s Chippy has since been taken over by Cameron Hinton and reopened in April.

Mr Hinton said: “It was the previous owner and has nothing to do with us.

“The previous owner owned the chippy, as well as two businesses in Stratford and Warwick.

“They all got raided, I believe.”

How can companies be fined for employing illegal workers?

UK Immigration Enforcement released the names of businesses that were given a penalty between July 1 and September 30 in 2025 for using an illegal workforce.

These penalties may apply to an offence which was committed months or even years before.

Penalties for employing people with no right to work can be severe, including spending up to five years in jail and paying an unlimited fine if businesses are found guilty of employing someone they knew did not have the right to work, according to Gov.uk.

Businesses can also be found guilty if they had “reasonable cause to believe” they were an illegal worker, such as if they had no permission to be in the UK, they were not allowed to do certain types of work in the UK or if they had false documents.
