Motorway reopened over 30 hours after fire tore through HGV on roadside

A MOTORWAY has fully reopened over 30 hours after a fire tore through a HGV using the carriageway.

The M5 was closed following the blaze which broke out at around 10pm on Tuesday (May 26) and saw the large vehicle burnt to a crisp.

The northbound carriageway was closed completely for several hours while firefighters tackled the flames, which also caused damage to the grass verge on the side of the carriageway.

At around 2am on Wednesday (May 27) lanes three and four of the carriageway were reopened, but lanes one and two remained closed while the remains of the vehicle were recovered and the damage to the road itself was inspected.

Emergency resurfacing was carried out on the motorway, with the whole carriageway closed to allow for the work.

Following heavy rain overnight, the reopening of the road was slightly delayed, but National Highways announced the work had been completed by 7.30am this morning (Thursday).
