‘Major concern’ after barn catches fire

FIREFIGHTERS have prevented a dire situation following major concerns about a rural fire.

Multiple fire engines were called to a large barn fire on Thursday (May 28) in Bretforton.

Crews spent nearly nine hours at the scene working to contain the fire and stop it from spreading to a field of crops. The ‘physically demanding incident was made worse by the high heat and lack of shade’ with temperatures on the day already pushing 30 degrees.

Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service has since thanked neighbouring crews from Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service for their help with the incident.

A Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue spokesperson said: “On May 28 at 2.41pm the Pebworth crew was mobilised to a well alight barn fire in Bretforton alongside multiple crews from both Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service, and Warwickshire Fire and Rescue Service.

“Given the recent weather and location of this incident there were major concerns for the standing crop surrounding the building. Thankfully through excellent coordination and the joint efforts of everyone involved it was contained to just the barn.

“As the day went on and good progress was made, the incident slowly started to scale down with the Pebworth crew leaving the incident at 11.30pm being relieved by another HWFRS appliance.

“This was a physically demanding incident made worse by the high heat and lack of shade. This just goes to show that our crews are ready and able to deal with anything no matter the circumstances to protect our communities acting with the utmost professionalism.

“A big thanks to all crews involved, achieving a great stop and preventing what could’ve been a much more dire situation.”
