Morrisons is bringing back its popular Market Street meat and fish counters after a wave of complaints from shoppers following last year’s controversial closures.
The supermarket chain confirmed it is reopening the traditional counters at 13 stores, marking a major U-turn after shutting 70 locations as part of a cost-cutting programme in 2025.
Five stores have already reopened their counters, while another eight are set to follow in the coming weeks.
A Morrisons spokesperson said: “Our Market Street counters are part of our DNA. They are at the heart of our offer and a real differentiator for Morrisons.”
The retailer said it has spent the past year improving how the counters operate, reducing food waste and making them more efficient, allowing them to return to selected stores.
As well as bringing back fresh meat and fish served by specialist colleagues, Morrisons is updating the counters with grab-and-go options and flatbed displays to give customers more choice.
The supermarket is also introducing digital ordering screens at its pizza counters and expanding its range of freshly prepared food across Market Street.

The move comes after Morrisons announced a raft of closures last year, including 52 cafés, 13 florists, four pharmacies and all 18 Market Kitchen restaurants, alongside dozens of meat and fish counters.
While the supermarket has not confirmed whether all 70 closed counters will eventually return, it said more locations are currently being assessed and additional reopenings are expected to be announced.

The decision is likely to be welcomed by many loyal Morrisons shoppers, with the supermarket’s Market Street fresh food counters long seen as one of the chain’s biggest points of difference from rival supermarkets, allowing customers to buy fresh meat and fish served by in-store specialists rather than pre-packed products alone.
