Children’s nursing demonstration a hit at The Hive

Children’s nurses are being celebrated for their vital work supporting young patients and their families.

Staff and students from the University of Worcester’s children’s nursing programme marked the first-ever National Children’s Nurses Day with an event at The Hive in Worcester.

Organised by the Association of British Paediatric Nurses, the day recognised the crucial care provided by children’s nurses.

Caitlin Gwilliam, lecturer in children’s nursing at the University of Worcester, said: “It’s the first time ever that we’ve had a day dedicated to children’s nurses.

“It has been so wonderful to hear from people about the difference that those in this inspiring career have made to others’ lives.”

The event, held in the children’s library at The Hive, featured hands-on activities including a ‘find the germs’ game and demonstrations of medical equipment.

Children were invited to explore stethoscopes, interact with lifelike training mannequins, and learn more about the tools used in children’s healthcare.

The team also created a historical display tracing the evolution of children’s nursing, highlighting the move from general wards to specialised care and dedicated hospitals.

Ms Gwilliam said: “We’re really proud of the progress that has been made in providing specialised, child-centred care, and we look forward to continuing to advance the profession for future generations of children, young people, and their families.

“It has been great to let children get stuck into our colouring activities while we chat about the profession.

“Reaction has been fantastic.

“Around 30 people from the Bounce and Rhyme group came over and they were all chatting to us.

“The Hive really is a great venue for an event like this.”

The University of Worcester’s Nursing (Children’s) BSc (Hons) course remains highly competitive, with students completing placements on children’s wards throughout their three years of study.
