National anti-poverty expert to speak at The Hive

A national expert on poverty is set to speak in Worcester.

Joanna Mack, an author and film-maker known for her work on tackling poverty, will appear at The Hive library on July 15.

Her talk will explore social issues and community solutions, focusing on the power of shared public spaces.

Ms Mack described The Hive as “extraordinary” for its inclusive approach.

She said: “What makes the Hive so extraordinary is its openness, it’s not just for students, it’s a shared space for the whole community.

“Too many university libraries are closed off, but The Hive reaches out instead, and that’s what makes it so powerful.

“It creates a genuinely inclusive environment, and that kind of space can play an important role in tackling poverty.”

The Hive, which opened in 2012, is the UK’s first fully integrated public and university library and is used by both the University of Worcester and the wider community.

Ms Mack will be interviewed at the event by former BBC journalist Justyn Surrall.

She will discuss the partnership between the university and the city and explore how community engagement can help address different forms of poverty.

Professor David Green, vice chancellor and chief executive of the University of Worcester, welcomed her visit.

Professor Green said: “We are all truly delighted to be able to bring Joanna Mack to The Hive.

“It’s a vital opportunity to hear from one of the country’s leading thinkers on how to eliminate poverty in a setting that works every day to promote social inclusion.

“I hope that many local people will come to be part of the conversation on an issue that really matters.”

The event takes place from 6.30pm to 8pm and is free to attend, but booking is essential.

Tickets can be reserved through The Hive Library website.
