Worries for cyclist safety as road repair dips ‘feel like you’re offroading’

A KEEN cyclist is worried for safety after large dips have left a city road ‘feel like off-roading’.

Bertie Ballinger, who has previously run for the city council, said large dips have appeared on Hallow Road in Worcester following recent gas repair works.

Mr Ballinger, a regular cyclist, said the uneven surface poses a hazard adding that some dips are even deeper than potholes he has previously reported to the council.

A spokesperson for Worcester City council said it continued to liaise with Cadent Gas – which carried out the works – and are going to inspect the site next week, before taking whatever necessary steps are needed from the inspection.

“It could be dangerous”

Mr Ballinger said: “As you come over the Kepax Bridge, it’s the main route into town and St John’s so it is well-used.

“It might affect drivers if they keep quite far left because they are significant dips where they have clearly not filled the hole in that they have made.

“For a cyclist it feels like you’re off-road because it dips up and down.

“Especially if you’re going at speeds, you probably won’t even notice it.

“If you’re going down there at speed or you’re not an experienced cyclist, it could be dangerous.

“It’s deeper than a lot of potholes I have reported previously.”

Mr Ballinger said it was “disappointing” that follow-up checks had not been carried out after the works were finished.

“The fact it wasn’t reported by the contractors that did it or the council afterwards just shows the lack of work there,” he said.

Council to inspect site

A spokesperson for Worcester City Council said: “We are continuing to liaise with Cadent Gas following the completion of their repair works on Hallow Road and Henwick Road.

“We will be visiting to inspect the site next week, and have invited a Cadent Gas representative to be present for this.

“Once the site visit is complete, any issues will be logged and next steps to resolve these will be decided.”

Worcester News has contacted Cadent Gas for comment.
