McDonald’s drops cryptic clue after Monopoly ends for good after 20 years

McDonald’s is teasing a new feature on social media with fast food fans left wondering what it could mean for them.

The restaurant chain confirmed earlier this month that its annual game of Monopoly wouldn’t be returning, but now customers could be in for a new kind of treat.

On Facebook, the official McDonald’s account shared several pictures of a gold vault with various symbols on it, including a snowflake, the map of Australia, what appears to be a bacon rasher, a block of cheese, a padlock and some abbreviations such as IND, SGP and NLD.

This has led to several people guessing what it could be about since the caption on the post gives nothing away: “cheese… padlock… whatever it means I’m in”.

McDonald’s teases customers with cryptic clues after axing Monopoly

Earlier this week, McDonald’s revealed a new menu would be dropping in the coming days, with items inspired by countries around the world.

World Menu Heist returns to restaurants for the second time and fan-favourite McDonald’s items from Germany, Canada, the UAE, the Netherlands, India, China and Australia to the UK & Ireland feature on the menu.

It’s believed that the teaser relates to these items, which include the Big Rösti from Germany, the Maple & Cheddar Chicken and S’mores McFlurry from Canada, the Chicken & Egg McMuffin and Chicken and Bacon McMuffin from Australia, Paprika McShaker Fries from the Netherlands, Szechuan Sauce from China, Guava x Sprite Zero from India and Mac & Cheese Triangles from the UAE.

One person commented: “Taste the world or world heist is back”.

Someone else said: “S’mores mc flurry , maple bacon something,”.

The new menu will be available from Tuesday, September 22 at all UK and Ireland restaurants.

Since Monopoly won’t be coming back this year, fans have shared their disappointment in the comments on this post, with one saying: “If it’s not monopoly then I’m not interested”.

Another said: “Its not Monopoly”.

Others used the post as an opportunity to share what they’d like to see on the menu at the fast food chain’s restaurants.

This person said: “We want a retro menu.

“Bagels and the big breakfast.

“Chicken legend and potato wedges.

“Rolo mcflurry too. Yum.”

Someone else commented: “Just the chicken legend will do thanks”.

Another shared: “WE WANT BAGELS!”

McDonald’s axes Monopoly after 20 years

McDonald’s has axed its long-running Monopoly game promotion in the UK after 20 years.

First launched in 2006, the game gave customers the chance to win prizes by collecting game pieces from menu items (fries, wraps, drinks, McFlurry, and more).

The promotion last ran in the UK from September 10 to October 21, 2025.

Prizes available during last year’s promotion included:

Customers could also win free McDonald’s products, including Big Macs, Quarter Pounders, McFlurries, Apple Pies and milkshakes.

A McDonald’s spokesperson said: “We know how much our customers love our promotions, from the brand-new launch of CARDS in March, to our first-ever XBOX partnership as part of the Side Missions launch.

“We’re always looking for new ways to surprise and delight our customers, and while Monopoly won’t feature in 2026, we’ll continue listening closely to what they enjoy most as we shape future promotions.”
