Bereaved military families urged to apply for free Remembrance travel

Bereaved military families have just over a week left to apply for free train travel during Remembrance Weekend.

The new initiative is designed to help families attend services and events to honour loved ones who died while serving in the Armed Forces over the weekend of November 7-8.

For the first time, one next of kin of a service person who died while serving will be eligible for free travel on National Rail services.

The Worcestershire Armed Forces Covenant Partnership has welcomed the scheme.

Councillor Dan Boatright-Greene, Chair of Worcestershire’s Armed Forces Covenant Partnership, said: “The cost of travel should never be a barrier to remember loved ones who have given so much for our country.

“This is a welcome addition to the programme, and it will give hundreds of bereaved military family members the opportunity to travel by rail free of charge during Remembrance Weekend.

“The deadline is fast approaching so if you, or someone you know, can benefit from this opportunity, please do apply before the deadline.”

Eligible family members have until 12 noon on October 16 to apply.

Applications must be made through the Defence Medical Welfare Service.

Further information is available on the organisation’s website.

The scheme applies only to Remembrance Weekend events taking place on November 7 and 8, 2026.
