A BIRD, which was close to extinction, has been found wandering around a playing field.
The Great Crested Grebe, was brought to the Vale Wildlife Hospital and Rehabilitation Centre on May 11.
The birds are rarely spotted on land but despite initial concerns it had nothing wrong but a chipped claw.
Staff at the Vale Wildlife Hospital and Rehabilitation Centre said on Facebook: “A very quick visit from a rather unusual patient this week, a Great Crested Grebe.
“This beautiful aquatic bird was brought into care on Monday morning after being found wandering around a playing field. Unlike many birds, grebes are built almost entirely for life on the water – with their legs positioned so far back on their bodies, they are incredible divers and swimmers, but surprisingly awkward on land.
“That’s likely why s/he was so easy to approach and pick up.
“Thankfully, after a full examination, injuries amounted to nothing more than a chipped claw. After a short stay in care and some much-needed rest, this stunning visitor was safely released back onto local lakes the very next day, where they belong.
“A happy ending for a bird far more comfortable paddling than walking. ”
According to the RSPB, Great Crested Grebes came close to extinction in the 1800s due to demand for feathered headwear.
