Blind lurcher Gus finds his forever home after dog lovers take him in

A LURCHER who lost both eyes has found his forever home.

Gus, believed to be around six years old, arrived at Dogs Trust Evesham in April 2025 after being found as a stray.

He struggled to adjust to kennel life and required tailored training plans to help him feel more settled.

Chris Slight, rehoming centre manager at Dogs Trust Evesham, said: “Gus’s story is a wonderful example of what can be achieved when patience, compassion and teamwork come together.

“Everyone involved in his care was determined to give him the very best chance, and seeing him finally head home with Howard and Meg was incredibly special.

“We couldn’t be happier for him.”

What happened to Gus?

Veterinary checks revealed Gus was older than first thought and had ongoing pain in his legs and eyes.

Despite progress with his training, the charity decided he needed a break from kennels, and in September 2025, volunteer foster carers Howard and Meg welcomed him into their home.

Over time, they grew attached and decided to adopt him.

Gus continued to face health challenges, including severe eye problems that led to the removal of both eyes.

He also underwent treatment for masticatory myositis.

Despite these setbacks, Gus adapted well and remained with Howard and Meg throughout his treatment.

He was officially adopted on 9 June 2026 after receiving the all-clear from the veterinary team.

Howard and Meg said: “From the moment Gus came to stay with us, we knew he was something special.

“He’s faced more than his fair share of challenges, but he’s tackled everything with such resilience and has brought so much joy to our lives.

“We couldn’t imagine life without him and are so proud to officially call him part of the family.”

Staff at the rehoming centre celebrated the adoption with dog-friendly cake, balloons, and banners.

Now fully settled, Gus is thriving in his new home.

He has built a close bond with Howard and Meg, and the trust he developed during his foster placement has allowed for a smooth transition into permanent family life.

He now spends his days enjoying home comforts and the company of his new owners.
