ROADWORKS are causing long tail-backs on a major commuter route in and out of Worcester.
Traffic has been slow on the A44 London Road due to works being carried out by National Grid Electricity Distribution, with tailbacks reported as far as M5 junction 7.
Temporary lights and long rows of cones are in place on the key route serving the city centre.
The snarl-up was leading back around half a mile along the road heading out of town in the direction of the Waitrose superstore close to rush hour this afternoon.
Drivers had to wait in both directions amid the sweltering heat.
A spokesperson for National Grid Electricity Distribution confirmed the work involves reinforcement to support the local electricity network.
The representative said: “We’re carrying out reinforcement work on London Road in Worcester to help support the local electricity network.
” This involves an excavation, so temporary traffic lights are in place while we complete the work.
“We currently expect the work to finish on Friday 29 May. Traffic management will be in place throughout.
“We appreciate this may cause some disruption and thank people for their patience while we carry out this essential work.”
One driver reported it took 15 minutes to travel just a few hundred metres on Whittington Road.
Another said: “It’s a frustrating wait in hellish conditions, not the best advert for the town.
“Hopefully the work will be over soon.”
