Increased police presence at train station after upskirting arrest

POLICE have been on patrol at a Worcestershire train station after reports that a teenage girl was upskirted.

Officers have been present at Droitwich station throughout Thursday (April 23) following the arrest of a man on suspicion of voyeurism the day before (Wednesday).

A spokesperson for West Mercia Police said: “Following the incident that occurred at Droitwich Train Station yesterday, your local policing teams have been conducting high-visibility reassurance patrols at the train station and surrounding areas.”

The man, 18, was arrested by police after a report of the incident was made at around 7pm.

Lisa Hornberger, safer neighbourhood inspector for Droitwich, said: “We are aware of messages circulating on social media regarding an incident at Droitwich Train Station.

“I want to reassure the community that an 18-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of voyeurism, and the matter is now being investigated by our colleagues at the British Transport Police.”

Upskirting is an act where a person will use a piece of equipment such as a camera or a smart phone to capture an image or video from under a person’s clothing without their consent, usually for their own sexual gratification or to cause the victim to be humiliated or distressed by the act.

The act only became illegal in 2019, following a campaign by writer Gina Martin, who was a victim of upskirting herself while attending a festival two years prior.

It is now considered voyeurism, which is a sexual offence and can carry a sentence of up to two years in prison.
