Landlady ‘couldn’t sleep’ after objects launched at pub in late-night attack

A LANDLADY said she “couldn’t sleep” after objects were launched at the pub in a late-night attack.

Jacqueline Saxelby-Smith, who runs The Retired Soldier on Newtown Road, said her customers are among a number of people around Malvern who have had objects launched at them from a car.

Police said one woman on Graham Road was hit so hard that it left a bruise, while a man narrowly missed being hit in the eye.

“It’s not just our pub,” Mrs Saxelby Smith said. “They seem to be just aiming at people at random all over Malvern.”

Officers investigating the incident have said they believe the objects are being launched with a catapult or BB gun from a white car with blacked out windows.

They have appealed for anyone who may have been targeted or who may have information or footage to come forward.

The pub landlady, who has run The Retired Soldier with her son Jim Smith for nearly a year, said the perpetrators attacked the pub four times in one night.

After going to see what was going on, she said she was almost hit, leaving her so shaken that she struggled to sleep, fearing that the pub windows might be shattered.

“On one particular night, they fired into the garden four times and narrowly missed hitting two people,” she said.

“I heard something hit the back wall and I went down to see where it had hit and they fired again and almost hit me.

“I was so shaken, I couldn’t sleep.”

In the hopes of deterring future attacks and reassuring customers, the pub has installed extra CCTV.

“Customers aren’t in specific danger here as it’s not just us,” Mrs Saxelby-Smith said.

“We have now installed more CCTV in the garden.”
