Nearly six million UK drivers risk a £50 fine for failing to follow roundabout rules correctly.
A study from Compare the Market revealed that one in six motorists finds roundabouts stressful to navigate.
More than half of UK licence holders put themselves at risk of a penalty specifically when using mini-roundabouts.
The research found that 55 per cent of motorists admit to breaking key rules at smaller junctions.
Among those surveyed, 48 per cent admitted to driving over raised central markings.
A further 62 per cent confessed to driving over painted flat markings on the road surface.
Mini-roundabout rules and £50 penalties
Highway Code Rule 185 states that drivers must give priority to traffic approaching from the right unless signs, road markings, or traffic lights direct otherwise.
Rules 188 to 190 govern mini-roundabouts and require all vehicles to pass round the central markings unless too large to do so.
The regulations highlight that mini-roundabouts offer less room and less time to signal, demanding extra care on approach.
Motorists who cut across the painted or raised circles commit an offence under traffic regulations.
Police can issue a fixed penalty notice of £50 to anyone caught driving over the markings without a valid reason.
Expert advice for motorists
Julie Daniels, from the car insurance team at Compare the Market, urged drivers to brush up on their junction etiquette.

Julie Daniels said: “Although roundabouts are designed to keep traffic moving smoothly, our research shows that for many motorists they can be a source of stress and confusion.”
She added that motorists should avoid rushing and take time to assess the junction before entering.
Drivers are advised to use the mirror, signal, manoeuvre routine well in advance of reaching the give-way line.
Motorists must also watch carefully for more vulnerable road users, including cyclists, horse riders, and pedestrians crossing near junctions.
Daniels noted that taking time to refresh Highway Code knowledge helps motorists navigate roundabouts safely and avoid unexpected fines.
