A care home chef has been shortlisted for a national award.
Ruaan Prins, chef manager at Sanctuary Care’s Heathlands Residential Care Home in Pershore, is a finalist in the Care Chef of the Year category at the National Care Awards 2026.
Mr Prins, who recently won the Care Home Worker Award at the Worcestershire Health and Social Care Awards, has been praised for his “innovative approach to dining” and his commitment to resident wellbeing at the not-for-profit home.
Kerrie Haines, home manager at Heathlands, said: “We are thrilled that Ruaan has been recognised at a national level.
“He brings incredible passion, creativity and care to everything he does.
“While his food is exceptional, it is the relationships he builds with residents and the experiences he creates that make such a difference to people’s lives.
“This recognition is thoroughly deserved.”
During his three years at Heathlands, Mr Prins has introduced regular fine dining evenings, transforming mealtimes into social experiences.
The evenings are inspired by residents’ memories of dining out with loved ones and feature elegantly dressed tables, waiter service and specially prepared menus.
The events have grown to include family carers and members of the local community, providing a dementia-friendly environment where guests can enjoy restaurant-quality food and companionship together.
Mr Prins also supports residents in other meaningful ways, running hands-on cookery sessions such as bread making and pasta workshops.
He recently helped one resident fulfil a wish to become “chef for the day” and cook for fellow residents.
Mr Prins said: “I am incredibly honoured to be shortlisted for Care Chef of the Year.
“For me, food is about much more than what is on the plate.
“It is about creating moments of joy, bringing people together and helping residents continue to enjoy the experiences and hobbies they love.
“I am proud to be part of the Heathlands team and grateful for the support of my Sanctuary Care colleagues and residents.”
Mr Prins has previously won Sanctuary Care’s national MasterChef competition.
Winners will be announced at the National Care Awards ceremony in November.
