Plans to open a new martial arts academy in Worcester submitted to council

A martial arts academy could soon open its doors in Worcester.

Plans have been submitted to convert a vacant industrial unit at Bromyard Business Park into a Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training centre.

The plan proposes a new ALBA Jiu Jitsu Academy that would offer structured training in a safe and welcoming environment for children, teenagers and adults.

Programmes would include self-defence, anti-bullying education, confidence building and schemes to promote physical and mental wellbeing.

Thomas Bracher, who submitted the proposal, is a European Black Belt Champion, a recognised ambassador for participation in sport, youth development and healthy living as well as head coach of ALBA Jiu Jitsu.

The academy would focus on technical instruction, partner drills and structured training on specialist matted flooring, with no weightlifting equipment, cardio machines, or high-intensity fitness classes on site.

A statement submitted with the application said: “The applicant’s vision is to create a high-quality martial arts academy that provides a safe, welcoming and professional environment.

“Through their existing academies, they have seen first-hand how structured martial arts training builds confidence, resilience, respect and discipline in both children and adults.”

The plans include a large matted training area, a modern reception and waiting area, and fully accessible ground-floor facilities.

The first floor would provide male and female changing rooms, showers, toilets, lockers and a laundry room.

Classes would be limited to around 20 participants to ensure safe coaching ratios, with arrivals and departures staggered throughout the day.

The academy would employ around five to six coaches, though only two would typically be on site at any one time.

The site has six dedicated parking spaces, with additional overflow parking available nearby.

Opening hours would be Monday to Friday from 4.30pm to 9.30pm, with additional morning sessions on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 11am to 1pm, and Saturdays from 9.30am to 1.30pm.

The planning statement noted that the proposed use would generate significantly less noise and vehicle movement than the current industrial use, and would have minimal impact on neighbouring businesses.

The application is currently under consideration by Worcester City Council.
