A school library has received a £1,000 boost to help expand its collection of books.
Christopher Whitehead Language College in Worcester received the funding through the county councillor fund from Alan Amos, county councillor for Bedwardine and city councillor for Lower Wick and Pitmaston.
It is the fourth consecutive year he has supported the school’s Learning Resource Centre (LRC) with divisional funding.
Cllr Amos said: “I am delighted that again this year I was able to give the school another donation to add to its library.
“Reading is one of the most basic skills and books are the mark of a civilized society. Books will never die out despite the endless predictions of a boring digital future.
“Reading is a great pastime as well as a source of information and inspiration. It is wonderful to see the enthusiasm of so many young people enjoying reading and choosing new titles.
“The pupils and the school choose the titles so the books are what the school needs and what the pupils want to read, so they will be well used.”
Students and staff gathered in the school’s reading garden on Tuesday (July 14) to celebrate the donation.
Deborah Stephenson, LRC manager at Christopher Whitehead Language College, said: “We are very grateful to Cllr Alan Amos for his generous donation of £1,000 to help purchase books this year.
“His contribution plays an important role in keeping our shelves refreshed and our stock up to date for students.
“This year’s book haul includes graphic novels, thrillers, romantasy fiction, and footballers’ biographies, many of which were suggested by student librarians.”

The funding also allowed the school to replace well-loved modern and classic titles that had been lost over time.
Cllr Amos joined students and staff to view the new additions and enjoy refreshments in the school’s reading garden.
He said: “It was a great afternoon to see the purchases and have a cuppa and cake afterwards with the pupils and staff.”
Ms Stephenson added: “In the glorious sunshine, guests enjoyed a selection of delicious cakes provided by our school canteen while chatting with students about their favourite new additions to the LRC collection.”
