Student welfare officer taking on all challengers in 50 hour ‘poolathon’

A student welfare officer is taking on a pool marathon to raise money for students facing financial hardship.

Ian Alley, student welfare officer at the University of Worcester, will play pool for 50 hours straight in a bid to raise funds for the university’s Student Hardship Fund.

The challenge will begin at 10am on Thursday, October 15, at The Hangar, the bar at Worcester Students’ Union, and finish at 12 noon on Saturday, October 17.

He will spend more than two days at the pool table playing anyone who wishes to take him on.

Mr Alley said: “Students, staff, members of the community, anyone can get involved by taking me on at any point during the 50-hour marathon, and all it’ll cost them is a donation to the Student Hardship Fund.”

A seasoned fundraiser with 25 years of experience supporting various charities, Mr Alley said he was inspired to focus on students this time around.

He said: “I have realised that many students find themselves in all manner of crisis situations, but to their immense credit they try so hard to persist with their studies and it is the University’s dedicated student support staff and the Student Hardship Fund that often provides the necessary support for them to do so.”

Mr Alley, an experienced pool player who has even shared a table with legendary snooker player, ‘The Whirlwind’ Jimmy White, welcomes all challengers, students or staff.

He said: “I will only give myself brief breaks for the loo and to eat and drink snacks between shots, and I’ll be frequently changing waistcoats from my vast colourful and sparkly range to keep myself fresh and looking super.”
