Sturgeon and Beano among big names at this year’s Dundee Book Festival

Nicola Sturgeon, crime specialist Professor Sue Black and the Beano are among the big names at this year’s Dundee Book Festival, billed by its organisers as “a celebration of writers and reading”.

Now in its second year, the festival features 25 events across three days, with a programme that brings together established and emerging voices from across literature, politics and science.

Former first minister Ms Sturgeon will appear in conversation about her bestselling memoir Frankly, reflecting on leadership, public service and her personal experiences in politics.

Prof Black will return to Dundee to discuss her book An Expert Witness: Forensic Science on Trial, sharing insights from more than four decades working in criminal investigation and the justice system.

The line-up also features a number of leading Scottish authors, with Graeme Macrae Burnet discussing his latest novel Benbecula and Jenni Fagan presenting her novel The Delusions.

Broadcaster and writer Sally Magnusson will appear in conversation about her book The Shapeshifter’s Daughter and Graeme Armstrong will be speaking about his book Ravenheart.

The programme includes events for families – most notably an interactive session hosted by Beano directors of mischief and mayhem, Mike Sterling and Craig Graham.

This event will see children helping create a comic strip, giving them a taste of how the publication develops its stories and characters.

A new partnership with London’s Southbank Centre will bring A Poet in Every Port to Dundee, with the Mobile National Poetry Library offering a weekend of free activity, readings and workshops for audiences of all ages.

Masterchef finalist and local chef Sarah Rankin will also be hosting an event at the city’s McManus Galleries which the organisers promise will be “a truly memorable highlight”.

Anna Day, head of libraries and culture at Leisure & Culture Dundee, said: “We’ve built on the success of our first year by bringing together recognised names and local voices in a programme that remains affordable and accessible.

“We’ve listened to audience feedback and expanded events for families.

“Our partnership with Southbank Centre, as part of their 75th anniversary, brings A Poet in Every Port to Dundee and opens up poetry to wider audiences.

“The festival is a celebration of writers and reading and a chance for visitors and Dundonians alike to celebrate our city.”

The Dundee Book Festival 2026 runs from June 19-21 in venues across the city, with most tickets priced at £5.
