Town’s new service station takes shape as signs tease food outlets

A new service station is taking shape on a long-vacant site in Kidderminster.

Construction is well underway at the new petrol station and services off St Mary’s Ringway on Churchfields.

The main services building is now fully constructed with EV charging points seen being installed this week.

Signage has gone up welcoming customers to “Kidderminster Services Co-op” with posters in the window teasing potential food outlets moving into the site, including Greggs.

The services will be located at the former CMS Vauxhall dealership, which was flattened earlier this year to make way for the new 24-hour petrol station.

The site will also include a kiosk store with food to go, EV charging spaces, car parking, a jet wash and landscaping.

The CMS Vauxhall dealership closed shortly after the business went into administration in August 2023 with staff being made redundant.

The site has remained vacant since then with the new proposal aiming to create ten full-time and ten part-time jobs.

Councillors at a Wyre Forest District Council planning meeting in January voted in favour of the plan, which had been recommended for approval by council officers.

At the time, Councillor Marcus Hart said that there had been 65 objections to the plan as well as a “plethora of comments on social media” with concerns over increased traffic on the ring road and its closeness to the Sainsbury’s petrol station.

He said: “It’s a redundant site on and it’s an eyesore at the moment. The plan includes landscaping and greenery – yes it’s 24/7 but so are lots of other petrol stations.”

He said he had “considered objections very carefully” but that the application was planning compliant and if turned down, the decision would be reversed at appeal.

The applicant, EG On The Move Limited, said: “The proposed development will comprise a new comprehensive roadside facility for which there is an identified need in the context of a shortfall of such services in the wider Kidderminster area.

“The proposed development will allow for the provision of eight high-powered (150KW+) EV charging points on the SRN for which there is an evident need.

“The proposed development will also bring back an active economic use to the site which has remained vacant for over a year. ”
