An evening of thrilling choral and orchestral music is in store at Worcester Cathedral.
Worcester Festival Choral Society will perform a programme of British and American favourites on Saturday, November 21.
The 140-strong choir, the region’s leading large classical choir, will headline with Ralph Vaughan Williams’s 1936 cantata Dona Nobis Pacem, an emotionally powerful plea for peace featuring Walt Whitman’s verse.
The concert will also feature Leonard Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms, combining Hebrew text, vibrant melodies and syncopated rhythms, alongside Aaron Copland’s lively Appalachian Spring, depicting a young American pioneer couple preparing for their wedding.
Soprano Susanna Fairbairn and baritone Jolyon Loy, whose credits include the Royal Opera House and English National Opera, will perform as soloists. They will be accompanied by the Meridian Sinfonia symphony orchestra, conducted by Worcester Cathedral director of music Samuel Hudson.
Founded in 1861, the auditioned choral society draws singers from across the region and stages three major cathedral concerts each season. Many members also sing with the Three Choirs Festival Chorus, returning to Worcester in 2027.
