ANGLERS have been warned not to fish on part of the River Severn and in a city park following reports of illegal fishing in Worcester.
Worcester City Council has warned that it is illegal to fish under Kepax Bridge and in Gheluvelt Park.
West Mercia Police is investigating reports of illegal fishing on the River Severn in the area and is working with Angling Trusts and the Anglers Association to tackle the issue.
A spokesperson for Worcester City Council said: “Fishing is not permitted under Kepax Bridge or anywhere in Gheluvelt Park. Fishing there could result in a fine or prosecution.
“If you’re looking for somewhere to fish in Worcester, there are plenty of permitted venues available through the Worcester Angling Society.
“Thank you for helping us protect our parks and waterways for everyone to enjoy.”
A West Mercia Police spokesperson confirmed it had received reports of illegal fishing at the river at Gheluvelt Park, and they will be working alongside other agencies to patrol this area.
The spokesperson added: “Operation Leviathan is a collaborative effort by police and partner organisations to combat illegal fishing and fish theft from waterways in Worcestershire.
“This operation involves patrolling the River Severn and conducting checks for rod licenses, permits, and anti-social behaviour.
“The partnership includes the South Worcestershire Rural and Business Crime team, the Angling Trusts, the Voluntary Bailiffs Scheme, and the Anglers Association.
“The operation aims to reduce illegal fishing and fish theft by sharing information and crime prevention advice with anglers, walkers, and those working on the river.
“The Environment Agency operates a confidential reporting line for public concerns around fisheries crime.
“It is important to report illegal fishing to help protect fish populations and ensure fair access to fishing opportunities for all license holders.”
