Well-travelled Malvern couple celebrate golden wedding anniversary

A WELL-TRAVELLED couple are celebrating their golden wedding anniversary.

Jeanette and Mario Eastham, who live in Malvern, marked 50 years of marriage earlier this month.

The couple’s story spans continents, careers and family milestones and began with a proposal three times before Jeanette finally said yes.

Jeanette, 82, was born in India where her father was a businessman, moved to Maghull near Liverpool and later ran a property business and florists and worked as a PA.

She said: “The secret to the success of the marriage is not letting him have his own way but to let him enjoy his golf and backgammon.”

Mario, 79, was born in Germany and raised in Chorley.

He travelled the world as a professional musician, performing with his band The Legend and working in Australia and Iran.

The Easthams married at Southport Town Hall on April 3, 1976 and lived together in South Africa from 1980 for Mario’s casino work.

They returned to the UK 20 years ago, settling in Malvern where their daughter Shirley Bradley lives.

The pair have three children – Lorraine Walsh, Shirley and Richard Eastham – and four grandchildren in twins Emma and Anna, Megan and Simon.

They marked their anniversary at home with a “lovely” cake.

Jeanette added: “We were celebrating in our home, all laid on by our daughter Shirley, and it was absolutely wonderful. Friends and family all joined us to celebrate a very special day.”

Mario will also celebrate his 80th birthday in June and Shirley’s 60th with a country and western night planned in Malvern.

He has been a member of Bransford Golf Club for around 20 years.
