Worcester man avoids jail for assault and controlling behaviour

A Worcester man has avoided immediate jail time for assault and controlling or coercive behaviour.

Andrew Tanner, of Wylds Lane, engaged in controlling or coercive behaviour towards a woman between October 20, 2025, and January 3, 2026.

The court noted his behaviour included assaults, controlling who attended their home and damaging property.

He also assaulted a man by beating him in West Bromwich on January 2.

The 31-year-old previously admitted to both charges at Wolverhampton Magistrates’ Court in August.

Appearing for sentencing at the same court on Monday (October 5), he was given a nine-month prison sentence, suspended for 18 months, for controlling or coercive behaviour, and a two-month sentence for assault, which was also suspended for 18 months and will run concurrently.

Tanner must complete 80 hours of unpaid work, and a restraining order prevents him from contacting the assault victim named in the order or attending anywhere they live for the next 12 months.
