Worcestershire bucks national trend as obesity rates fall, data shows

Fewer adults in Worcestershire are overweight or obese, according to latest data.

This is despite the county previously having higher obesity rates than the England average and it bucks national trends.

The percentage of adults who are overweight or obese in Worcestershire has fallen from 68 per cent to 63 per cent.

This is a notable improvement compared to the national figure, which has risen to 65 per cent.

Compared to the rest of the West Midlands, latest Government figures show Worcestershire now ranks second lowest in the West Midlands for adult excess weight (overweight and obesity combined).

And according to data published by the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities through the Fingertips Public Health website, the county has become one of the best-performing areas in the country for adults maintaining a healthy weight.

Councillor Alan Bailes, cabinet member for health and wellbeing at Worcestershire County Council, said: “I’m delighted that so many people across Worcestershire are taking control of their health and seeing real results.

“This isn’t about one-size-fits-all advice, it’s about meeting people, whether that’s a walking group, a cookery session, or specialist support, so everyone can find something that works for them.”

The improvement follows extra investment by the county council’s public health team in community-led services that help people manage their weight.

The Healthy Worcestershire programme offers physical activity and wellbeing sessions, while other schemes include Slimming World on Referral, Health Walks, and grant-funded community projects.

Mike, from Worcester, lost two-and-a-half stone with the support of his local Slimming World group.

He said: “The best thing that’s happened as a result of losing weight is just that I feel better in myself.”

Sally, from Kidderminster, attended Healthy Worcestershire sessions and praised the experience.

She said: “Since starting the Monday sessions, I have lost four stone in weight and am so much fitter.

“I enjoy the company and have made new friends.

“The instructors are very well informed and professional.”
