Vets forced to amputate leg of ‘sweetest’ dog found abandoned in village

A STRAY dog had to have her leg amputated after she was found abandoned in a village in a terrible condition.

Ethel, a Jack Russell Terrier, was described as weak, underweight, and suffering from old wounds when she was discovered last week.

Initial inspections revealed that Ethel had moderate dental disease and a potentially cancerous mass on the left side of her chest.

Her right leg also had a particularly bad strangulation injury.

Despite this, she was described as having the sweetest temperament.

Wychavon District Council’s dog warden team collected Ethel and rushed her to the vets to be stabilised and for pain relief.

After seven days, and with no owner coming forward, Ethel was passed into the care of an organised charity foster home to receive specialist care.

Sadly, Ethel had to later be returned to the vets to have her leg amputated.

However, following the amputation, Ethel is said to be on the road to recovery, and is comfortable and doing well.

Pip Griffin, senior dog warden for Worcestershire Regulatory Services (WRS) on behalf of Wychavon, said: “It is upsetting to see the unnecessary suffering Ethel has endured.

“When she was found, she was in a huge amount of pain, yet she still has the sweetest temperament.

“It is important we find the former owner so that we can prevent them allowing this to happen again.

“Sadly, Ethel’s story is not a unique experience as we continue to find more dogs with welfare needs being seized across the county. We will continue to ask for the support of the public to track down negligent owners. If you know who had this dog previously, please come forward and provide a statement.”
