A danger warning has been issued following reports of people swimming in a quarry.
The Malvern Hills Trust is urging the public to stay out of Gullet Quarry in the Malvern Hills, which is off-limits to swimmers due to serious safety hazards.
The warning follows a recent incident on May 31, in which a group broke into the site to swim but were safely asked to leave.
Marie Dipple, community and conservation officer at the Malvern Hills Trust, said: “With the recent spell of warm weather, we understand why people may be drawn to open water.
“However, Gullet Quarry is not a safe place to swim.
“The water remains extremely cold, even during hot weather, and can cause cold water shock, which can affect anybody regardless of their swimming ability.
“There is also the additional risk posed by unstable quarry faces and falling rock.
“Swimming is not permitted at Gullet Quarry and, over the years, additional fencing and warning signs have been installed to help deter access and prevent further tragedies.
“We would urge everyone to respect those safety measures and enjoy the Hills responsibly.”
The trust said Gullet Quarry’s cold water and unstable rock faces make it particularly hazardous.
The warning comes amid wider concerns about water safety after a heat spike at the end of May drew huge crowds to open-water swimming spots and led to 17 drowning deaths across the UK.
The charity is also encouraging people to follow the Royal Life Saving Society UK’s Water Safety Code, which offers practical advice for staying safe around reservoirs, lakes, rivers and other inland waters.
