A specialist college for young people who are blind or vision impaired welcomed a visit from an MP keen to learn more about its work.
Dame Harriett Baldwin, MP for West Worcestershire, visited New College Worcester (NCW) on Friday (June 5), to meet students, staff and employer partners to gain an insight into its work in preparing students for independent living, further education and future employment.
During her visit, Dame Harriett took part in a discussion about the college’s achievements and the wider challenges facing specialist education, particularly around funding and policy.
The conversation was informed by NCW’s recent report, Academically Successful and Independently Able, and focused on the importance of connecting education to employment opportunities for young people with vision impairment.
The visit included an employability panel featuring students who shared their experiences of work placements and preparing for the future.

Students Ghaalib, Dominic, Dylan, and Toby spoke about their aspirations and the importance of real-world experience.
Dominic described his role at a local gym and his passion for health and fitness, while Ghaalib said travelling independently to his placement had helped him grow in confidence.
The group also discussed barriers faced by visually impaired young people in the workplace and ways to overcome them.
Representatives from Dolphin Computer Access, an assistive technology company, spoke about their positive experience of hosting a visually impaired student and how inclusive work placements had benefited their business.
Following the panel, Dame Harriett toured Vinchel Lodge, the college’s refurbished sixth form accommodation, where staff demonstrated the essential role of habilitation in helping students develop the skills and confidence needed for adult life.
She also met sixth form student Casey, who spoke about enjoying life at the college and the many opportunities available.
Rachel Perks, principal at New College Worcester, said: “We were delighted to welcome Dame Harriett Baldwin to NCW and to showcase the incredible work of our students and staff.
“It was a valuable opportunity to discuss how education, technology, and employability come together to ensure our students can thrive and succeed in the world of work and beyond.”
