Warning as 52 Post Office branches to shut due to Morrisons Daily closures

More than 50 Post Office branches are set to close as Morrisons shuts dozens of its convenience stores.

The closures affect at least 52 branches housed within Morrisons Daily stores across England, Scotland, and Wales.

Many of the affected sites are in southern England.

The decision follows the supermarket’s move to close around 100 Morrisons Daily shops.

A spokesman for Morrisons said: “tough but necessary decision”.

The stores were part of Morrisons’ £190 million acquisition of McColl’s in 2022.

Morrisons said the shops had been unprofitable for years and that the situation had been made worse by significant cost increases linked to government policy decisions.

The Post Office is understood to be looking for replacement shops that could host services in affected communities.

According to Better Retailing, the closures could put the Post Office network close to falling below the Government’s minimum requirement of 11,500 branches.

Morrisons has stressed that the move relates to loss-making stores, while it continues to operate and grow its wider Morrisons Daily convenience business through other models.
