A rock icon “delighted” chess players after making an appearance at a tournament in Bewdley.
Robert Plant joined in with some casual chess after attending the Mayor of Bewdley’s Charity Junior Chess Tournament and Worcestershire Junior Rapid-Play Championships at St George’s Hall on Saturday (August 1).
Chess players enjoyed a lovely day in the town at the event, which was organised by John Wrench, Nigel Towers and Simon Berry, with help from Paul Serafini and Luke Barton.
32 Junior chess players took part with the majority from Worcestershire, plus a few others from further afield.
This was an ECF Rated event and was supported by Chess in Schools and Communities.
The organisers said: “Congratulations to Jack Jenkinson, who won the Under-18 section with five points from six games, and Oscar Evans-Muldoon, who won the Under-12 section with five points from six games.
“There were also prizes for second place, the highest scoring girl and highest under 8.
“The Mayor of Bewdley Sharon Harvey was present throughout the day and Kidderminster Mayor Shazu Miah also visited the event and enjoyed some casual chess. We were delighted to have Robert Plant attend the tournament who also joined in with some casual chess.”
As well as the young chess players, parents and locals of all ages played friendly games in the adjacent room and outside the venue.
The players added: “Feedback was very positive and it was a great day of chess in a fantastic setting.”
