Man caught using phone while driving down motorway narrowly avoids disqualification

A driver has narrowly avoided a ban after admitting to using his mobile phone on the M5.

Scott Popple, of Harvard Avenue, Honeybourne, near Evesham, was caught using the phone while driving on the northbound carriageway between junctions 20 and 19 in Somerset on December 3, 2025.

He pleaded guilty to using a handheld device while driving a motor vehicle at Cheltenham Magistrates’ Court on August 26.

The 40-year-old was fined £346 and order to pay £120 and a £138 surcharge.

The magistrates’ decided not to impose a driving disqualification on Popple due to mitigating circumstance relating to the impact it would have on his family.
