City restaurateur welcomes new government policy as ‘good for everyone’

A CITY restaurateur says a new government policy will help the community and businesses alike.

Tommy Badham, owner of Ostlers Number One at Severn Terrace, Worcester, is pleased to see the government introduce a temporary VAT reduction on all children’s meals over the summer holiday.

The five percent temporary reduction remains in place from June 25, 2026 through to September 1, 2026.

“Children’s meals are never something we have normally done,” explained Mr Badham. “The fact they have brought it out means a lot of other places will be doing the same.

“It’s good for families, children, everybody really.

“I’m a father myself and being a restaurateur at the same time, it’s a tough old climate we’re in – not just hospitality, all sectors.

“I go shopping for my kids and see these prices rise every day, it’s nice that for six weeks there is a little bit of relief for families and children alike.”

Mr Badham added that as trade tends to drop over the summer months, the increased custom from families will help restaurants.

“With the weather it’s natural for trade to drop a little,” he explained. “We’re happy to do anything we can to benefit the community and put some bums on seats for us.”

Ostler’s new children’s menu is for all aged 15 and below and includes mains such as burgers and fish and chips, along with a selection of desserts.

What is the temporary VAT reduction on children’s meals?

In a Ministerial Statement made by the Chancellor on May 21, 2026, the government announced the introduction of a temporary reduced rate for supplies of children’s meals and tickets to certain attractions.

The reduction is intended to reduce costs to families with children over the summer holiday period.

It came into place on June 25, 2026 and will continue to remain in place until September 1, 2026.
