DIY SOS fans have said that they were ’emotional’ after watching the final episode of the hit series, which was filmed in Worcestershire, before the BBC ‘rest’ the show in 2027.
The final episode of the 35th series of DIY SOS aired on Tuesday (October 27) evening and saw Nick Knowles and the team, as well as an army of volunteers, come to the aid of 11-year-old Nathan and his family who live in Bewdley.
Nathan lives with Tuberous Sclerosis Complex type 2, Autism, refractory epilepsy, and is globally developmentally delayed.
Nathan also suffers from up to 200 seizures a day.
In the episode, the DIY SOS team create a new home that will improve the quality of life for Nathan, as well as his parents Emma and John, and older sister Keira.
The Bewdley episode is the final episode of the much-loved series before it is ‘rested’ by the BBC in 2027.
According to the BBC, this decision has been made in light of the broadcaster’s ‘saving challenges’.
After watching the episode, many fans and DIY SOS volunteers from the Wyre Forest area and across the UK said they became ’emotional’ knowing that the beloved series would not be returning in 2027.
David Sidwell said: “To think that this might be the last DIY SOS big build that I’ll get the chance to work on is even more emotional.”
“I’ve had the pleasure and honour of working with some incredible people on builds, the length and breadth of the country over the past 11 years as a volunteer, and to think that the last one that there might possibly be was the closest to my hometown.”
“I’ve made some lifelong friends through this programme, as well as overcome personal challenges from when I applied for my first build back in 2015.”
A petition to prevent the ‘cancellation’ of DIY SOS has been signed by over 46,000 people.
In light of the petition, the BBC confirmed that DIY SOS will ‘rest’ in 2027 but has not been cancelled, and a new spin-off show will revisit the successes from the show’s past.
A BBC spokesperson said: “In light of the BBC’s savings challenges, we have taken the decision to rest DIY SOS in 2027 and commission a new spin-off show instead from producers South Shore.”
“DIY SOS Rebuilt My Life (w/t) will revisit successes from the show’s past and expand the brand on the BBC in a more cost-effective way next year.”
