Firefighters called to out-of-reach swan with worrying symptoms

A swan with worrying symptoms was rescued from the city’s river by firefighters and volunteers.

The fire service’s boat crew was on the river Severn in Worcester to help rescue a swan that had not been eating.

Once caught, volunteers at The Swan Food Project transported the swan to the Vale Wildlife Hospital and Rehabilitation Centre.

Unfortunately, the swan started to have a fit and it was put to sleep.

Posting on Facebook, volunteers at The Swan Food Project, said: “Thank you for your help.

“On Thursday, a team from Worcester Fire Station turned out to help with a cygnet (last year’s) that had not been eating and was beyond our reach near the boathouse steps.

“Two volunteers then transported him to the Vale Wildlife Hospital.

“Unfortunately, he started having fits of some sort on the journey, suddenly throwing his head and neck around.

“This continued after admission, so he was put to sleep.

“This is very sad for all involved; sometimes the best we can hope for is a release from suffering.”
