Mystery over fish and chip shop for sale after 40 years of family ownership

MYSTERY surrounds a fish and chip shop that has been put up for sale after 40 years of continuous ownership.

The business is being marketed as a “genuine retirement sale” in an online business listing, but the exact location has not been revealed.

Rosens – the estate agent representing the fish and chip shop – declined to reveal the location to Worcester News.

The business, which has been operated by the same family for four decades, currently generates a weekly turnover of between £5,000 and £7,000.

According to the listing, this figure is achieved across just five trading days, with the shop closing by 9pm and relying solely on walk-in trade.

The listing described the business as: “A characterful fish & chip shop in the heart of a Tudor riverside town in Worcestershire, in the same family hands for the past 40 years and now offered as a genuine retirement sale.”

The property also includes a substantial owner’s flat, comprising four double bedrooms, a spacious lounge, large kitchen, bathroom, attic space and a balcony.

It is fully fitted with gas central heating and carpets.

“The route to grow takings is obvious: longer hours and a delivery channel,” adds the listing.

“(This is) a rare chance to acquire a charming, well-established fish & chip shop full of character and traditional appeal, in a town-centre location with high footfall and strong passing trade.”

The listing describes the shop itself as having a “warm, traditional feel,” with tiled flooring underfoot and exposed wooden ceiling beams running throughout.

The seating area accommodates around 16 people.

“Behind the counter sits the main frying area, fully tiled, well laid out, and fitted with an electronic menu display,” it adds.

“To the rear is a large, fully equipped kitchen – well stocked and built for the demands of a busy service – and beyond that a fully tiled potato preparation room kitted out with modern equipment.”

Additional features include a long, narrow side corridor that provides delivery access, storage, and washroom facilities, and a cellar for further storage.

Outdoor space includes an area housing the walk-in fridge and storage.

The shop is surrounded by a mix of long-standing businesses, including estate agents, travel agents, coffee shops, solicitors, pubs, and a hotel.

Equipment included in the sale features a three-pan frying range, chipper and peeler, walk-in freezer, multiple fridges and freezers, drinks chillers, a six-pot bain-marie, kebab machines, a microwave oven, and a salad bar.

The owner is seeking £190,000 for the leasehold, with all equipment and fixtures included in the sale price.
