Readers react: Are e-bikes a menace or the future of transport?

Worcester News readers were divided after we asked whether e-scooters are a menace on the city’s streets or an important part of the future of transport.

It follows our report that West Mercia Police seized 138 e-bikes, e-scooters and e-mopeds in 2025/6, up from 111 the previous year and 47 the year before that.

Further data, revealed following a Freedom of Information request, shows that 135 were not appropriately registered in 2025/26, 107 in 2024/5 and 46 in 2023/24.

Here is a selection of your comments:

Jelly Bob: “I think if they are being used in a sensible manner I don’t see the issue.”

Steven Redpath: “Saw e-scooters in Amsterdam being used without anyone being in danger but they have good drivers and sensible road laws.”

James Taylor: “If the council or a private firm supply them then it is great. If scooters are privately owned it is a crime… 2 tier justice has many forms.”

Kevin Allen: “Too right they’re dangerous.”

Lizzy Pearce: “Banning e-scooters is silly when you think about it. They should be properly regulated and legal to use instead of keeping the current mess while mobility scooters remain largely unregulated.”

Dal Jo: “I think Worcester has bigger problems to worry about than e-scooters, like real crimes which seem to get ignored.”

Stephen Hughes: “Menace in the wrong hands.”

Sarah Weston: “The e-scooter isn’t the problem, it’s how they use it. Try clamping down on the illegal e-bikes around the city instead.”

Arlo Bayliss: “The problem is children using them on public footpaths. I can’t see any issue in adults choosing them to commute.”

Timbernailia: “So we can stop and seize scooters because they are illegal but not the boats?”

Warren Barrett: “Tax them and it will be fine.”

Steve Griffiths: “Well Birmingham rents them out so they can’t be that bad.”

Nicholas Burns: “It’s okay for the big e-bikes delivery riders are riding between people in the city centre, but children having fun must be stopped?”

Pauline Isherwood Carr: “Nearly got run over by one doing at least 30mph on a pathway.”

Seán Brown: “Nightmare on our paths. No room to walk now with mobility scooters, e-scooters and bicycles.”

Susie Q’s Sweet Bouquets and Hampers: “Absolute menace.”

Annie Dunbar: “A total menace!”

Samantha McClory: “Yes, they’re a menace.”

Wendy Owens: “Weaving in and out, too fast, no control. Older people are in danger.”

Julian Dowling: “Far too many illegal e-scooters, e-bikes and e-motorbikes are causing fear and injuries in Warndon.”

Arran McDonald: “I thought they wanted us to go net zero in this country. Anything they struggle to tax they want banned.”
