Roblox overhaul set for kids’ accounts in June – what parents need to check now

Roblox is set to update its parental controls in June as part of several safety measures for its players.

The popular online game platform has millions of users around the world, including in the UK.

From early June 2026, a new system of age-based accounts will decide which games on the platform under‑16s can see and how social their experience can be.

Here’s all you need to know as parents, including what updated controls you now have.

What safety changes are being made to Roblox?

Netmums shares that under the new system, children will be placed into Roblox Kids (roughly ages five to eight) or Roblox Select (nine to 15), before graduating to a standard account at 16.

Roblox says accounts will move automatically from Kids to Select at nine and from Select to standard at 16, tracking the birthday saved on the profile.

For those on Roblox Kids accounts, they will only be able to access experiences carrying Minimal or Mild content maturity labels.

Additionally, they will not have any communication features enabled by default, although a linked parent account can approve specific people the child is allowed to chat with.

Age checks will also be implemented to make sure users are in the correct category.

Those who refuse will be limited to family‑friendly titles with Minimal or Mild labels and no open chat.

Parents can help set this for their child by confirming their child’s date of birth through a linked account.

Alternatively, it can be confirmed through the third‑party provider Persona.

Roblox says Persona uses a short selfie video and, where needed, an ID document to estimate age, then deletes images and video once the check is finished in line with GDPR rules.

Persona, a European company, has also been assessed by the UK’s Age Check Certification Scheme, which evaluates age‑assurance technologies.

The shift comes as Roblox faces intense scrutiny over alleged child safety failures and multiple state lawsuits in the United States.

What parental controls have been updated for Roblox?

Roblox is expanding its parental controls dashboard as part of the changes.

This already lets adults manage content ratings, communication settings, screen‑time limits, spending caps and see who their child plays with.

Some controls will now stay available until the child is 16, instead of switching off earlier, giving parents a longer runway to adjust how much freedom they allow.

The latest update introduces more granular tools for under‑16s, including:

This means, for example, a parent can block a particular game until a younger sibling turns 13, while still approving it on an older child’s Select account.

Parents can also temporarily authorise an otherwise unavailable game so brothers, sisters or cousins can play together, without opening the floodgates to similar content.
