Counter terrorism teams to work with police this summer to safeguard events

Police are working with counter-terrorism teams to keep the public safe at events across Worcestershire this summer.

West Mercia Police have announced a partnership with Counter Terrorism Policing West Midlands to encourage vigilance and reporting of anything suspicious during the summer season, particularly at large gatherings such as music festivals and sports matches across our three counties.

Last month, the UK terrorist threat level was raised to severe, meaning an attack is highly likely.

Edd Williams, chief superintendent and West Mercia Police’s Prevent lead, said: “I want to reassure our communities that our advice is not linked to any specific intelligence linked to our region, it’s simply a timely reminder of how important it is to stay vigilant and report anything suspicious.

“We’re working alongside local venues, event organisers, and businesses to help keep events safe, and we’re asking the public to play their part too.

“By staying alert and sharing this advice with friends, family, and colleagues, we can all contribute to keeping our communities even safer.

“Trust your instincts.

“If you see something unusual or something that doesn’t feel right, report it straight away – don’t assume someone else will.”

West Mercia Police are reminding the public that although there is no specific threat to the region, everyone has a role to play in keeping themselves and others safe.

People are urged to be alert when commuting, socialising, or attending events.

The force is advising the public to report anything suspicious to security staff, police, or online at gov.uk/ACT.

They stress the importance of not waiting for someone else to act, and of looking out for one another.

In an emergency, people should always call 999.

West Mercia Police officers continue to work closely with event organisers, venues, and businesses to encourage vigilance.

The campaign is part of ongoing efforts to ensure public safety and raise awareness during a busy summer season that will see thousands of people attend events across the three counties.
