Worcestershire delivery drivers and couriers could be at increased risk of developing varicose veins.
Long stretches sitting behind the wheel, combined with frequent in-and-out movements to deliver parcels, puts extra strain on the legs, according to a vascular surgeon at Premier Veins based at Alexander House on the High Street in Inkberrow.
Massimo Vezzosi, consultant vascular and endovascular surgeon, said: “There are roughly 320,000 delivery drivers and couriers across the UK, and they face a unique combination of stresses on their legs due to the nature of their jobs.
“Drivers spend long periods sitting in vans, which slows circulation and increases pressure in the leg veins.
“Combined with repeated in-and-out movements to deliver parcels, this can put extra strain on the vein valves, leading to blood pooling and, over time, the development of varicose veins.”
The encouraging news is that drivers can take straightforward actions to lower their risk.
Mr Vezzosi said: “The good news is that there are simple steps drivers can take to reduce their risk.
“Regular stretching between drops, short walks around the van, staying hydrated, and considering compression socks can all help support healthy circulation.
“Worcestershire drivers should also watch for early warning signs such as aching, swelling, or visible veins and seek medical advice if these occur.”
