Andy Burnham has discussed legacy issues and Ukraine with Ireland’s premier during their first phone call since he became Prime Minister.
Micheál Martin congratulated Mr Burnham on his appointment, and both leaders said they looked forward to meeting “soon”.
The pair discussed legacy issues and Northern Ireland, Ukraine, Ireland’s presidency of the EU and EU-UK relations.

“The Prime Minister spoke to the Taoiseach of Ireland, Micheál Martin, today,” a Downing Street spokesperson said.
“The Taoiseach began by congratulating the Prime Minister on his appointment, with the Prime Minister thanking him and underlining how much he is looking forward to working together.
“The Prime Minister highlighted the importance of the UK’s partnership with Ireland and welcomed the continued close co-operation, particularly through the annual UK-Ireland Summit.
“The leaders agreed on the need to continue to work together across shared priorities, including security, energy, and both countries’ enduring commitment to the Good Friday Agreement.
“The Prime Minister then congratulated the Taoiseach on the launch of Ireland’s EU presidency.
“He reiterated the UK’s commitment to strengthening relations with the EU, to deliver opportunities for normal people across the UK.
“The Prime Minister and Taoiseach said they looked forward to meeting in person soon.”
Mr Burnham gave his first national address as Britain’s premier on Monday after becoming the seventh occupant of Number 10 since 2016.
He pledged that his premiership would be “a circuit breaker for Britain” and that he would lead the “biggest changes in the last 40 years” in politics and economics.
Mr Burnham held his first meeting of his new Cabinet on Tuesday after ousting allies of his predecessor Sir Keir Starmer.
Mr Martin said: “Great to speak to new UK PM Andy Burnham this morning.
“Very good discussion on the positive relationship and cooperation between Ireland and the UK.
“We also discussed Northern Ireland including ongoing work on legacy, Ukraine, Ireland’s EU Presidency and the EU-UK relationship.
“Look forward to meeting soon and to working closely together to benefit people across these islands.”
Later Minister for Foreign Affairs Helen McEntee spoke with the new Northern Ireland Secretary Sir Chris Bryant during a phone call.
She said she shared the “same commitment to delivering for the people of Northern Ireland and building relationships across these islands.
In a statement, Ms McEntee indicated that the legacy of Northern Ireland’s troubled past was at the fore of their conversation, and ongoing work in both jurisdictions to implement the Joint Framework on legacy.
They also discussed Ireland holding this year of the Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
“I emphasised the need for swift implementation of the commitments made by both governments under the Joint Framework,” she said.
“We also discussed EU-UK relations and my desire during our presidency to build on progress made over the past two years.
“I look forward to meeting the Secretary of State in person in the near future.
“No doubt there will be challenging times, but I am confident that by working closely together as co-guarantors of the Good Friday Agreement, we can navigate those and deliver for people across these islands.”
